A blink of an eye. Yet, as we promised then, we would always honor Darren’s memory. Their cases included military pension back pay, health insurance coverage, identity theft, immigration paperwork, and delayed IRS refunds.\n\nGottheimer’s full remarks can be found here.\n\n“One of the most important parts of my job is being an advocate and a champion for the families I’m lucky to represent here in North Jersey. By fighting for our Fifth District families, we’ve helped thousands of residents who’ve been denied Social Security checks, unemployment benefits, VA benefits, critical health care, tax refunds, or crucial resources they need, often because of bureaucratic red tape,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “Whether it’s the IRS, an insurance company, or a federal agency that’s gotten it wrong, I’ll always fight for Jersey families across the Fifth District to get what they are owed and deserve. If you need help with any issues, including Medicare, Social Security, passports, VA benefits, and so much more, please reach out to me.”\n\nIn the last five years alone, Gottheimer’s office has helped more than 780 veterans access their VA benefits and service medals; more than 1,834 Fifth District seniors access their earned Social Security checks and claw back over $2.6 million from the Social Security Administration; get more than 65 constituents back home from being trapped overseas, including some stranded in Israel after October 7; more than 4,500 constituents get their unemployment benefits; and claw back over $120 million owed to small businesses, non-profits, and constituents from the IRS. In total, Gottheimer’s office has clawed back more than $173 million to date for constituents through its casework team. Just among the cases highlighted today, the office helped get back more than $171,000 for Fifth District families.\n\nGottheimer joined Fifth District residents today:\n\nTom Gallagher of Mahwah: Tom’s brother, Retired Air Force Major John P. Gallagher, served in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years and now lives in an assisted living facility after being diagnosed with early dementia. Tom holds power of attorney and looks out for him. For five months, Retired Major John’s pension was not being deposited because his bank account had been closed due to fraudulent and unauthorized withdrawals. Tom reached out to Gottheimer’s office for help working with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), and Gottheimer’s team got right to work and contacted DFAS. The next day, DFAS processed John’s forms and placed his pension account back in active pay status. Within a week, DFAS confirmed the issue was resolved and that his brother’s back pay had been issued. In less than two weeks, Tom confirmed that his brother’s owed pension had received the gross pay he earned after waiting for five months.\n\nSuzanne Jackson of Highland Lakes: Suzanne is a registered nurse who has spent more than 40 years caring for patients at Englewood Hospital. This past July, she reached out to Gottheimer’s office after UnitedHealthcare denied coverage for a prosthetic limb, initially deeming it not medically necessary. Although her doctor said she qualified for a K3 prosthetic with a microprocessor knee, UnitedHealthcare only approved a K2 prosthetic after her first appeal, which meant she could not continue working 12-hour shifts as a nurse. After months of fighting the decision, and being unable to reach anyone at UnitedHealthcare to escalate her appeal, Suzanne turned to Gottheimer. His team contacted UnitedHealthcare and asked them to take another look. Just a day later, UnitedHealthcare approved the K3 prosthetic with a microprocessor knee, and Suzanne is still on the job at Englewood Hospital.\n\nJoey Shimm of Tenafly, on behalf of his wife, Yoko: Yoko’s green card arrived with a typo, an extra initial in her name, and the replacement came back with the very same mistake. When Yoko’s 95-year-old mother suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in Japan, Yoko needed a USCIS-approved travel document to get to her side, and the earliest appointment USCIS would offer was after her planned flight. Joey turned to Gottheimer’s office. His team immediately contacted the USCIS Newark Field Office Congressional Lead and secured an appointment for the very next day. Yoko received an ADIT stamp in her Japanese passport, which provides temporary proof of her lawful permanent resident status, and she traveled to Japan to be with her hospitalized mother. Gottheimer’s office will keep working with the family until the green card itself is fully corrected.\n\nRobert Lunzer of Englewood: For a year, money had been coming out of Robert’s monthly Social Security retirement benefit, and he had no idea why. It turned out to be from missing payments on a more than $93,000 Small Business Administration (SBA) COVID loan he never took out. The application didn’t even have his real name on it, only a signature he never signed, and the money was going to an offshore bank account. After two weeks of getting nowhere with the SBA, Robert called Gottheimer’s office. His team contacted the SBA the very next day, and the inquiry was sent to the SBA’s fraud unit. In just one week, the SBA validated Robert’s identity theft claim, forgave the entire $93,600 fraudulent debt, stopped the garnishment of his Social Security benefits, and refunded about $4,500 to him in a lump sum.\n\nAnn Marie and Jim Dunlop of Haworth: Ann Marie and Jim, both in their eighties, filed their taxes in mid-March, on time. The IRS told them to complete an ID verification over the phone, and then they never heard another word, aside from a letter every six weeks saying the IRS needed more time. Gottheimer’s team contacted the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), learned that the return was under review because of unverifiable income and withholding, and worked with Ann Marie and her accountant to gather the records needed to verify her withholding. Gottheimer’s office got the documents to TAS, a referral then went to the IRS, and in just a few short weeks, the Dunlops’ refund of more than $22,500 was in the mail.\n\nKevin Noah of Vernon: Kevin filed his federal tax return, and eight months went by without a word from the IRS. When the agency finally asked for additional documentation, it was documentation he could no longer get his hands on. Kevin reached out to Gottheimer’s office. His team contacted TAS and followed up to explain Kevin’s situation, including that his wife, Maryellen, had stopped working in January and that he had become her primary caregiver after she was hospitalized. In less than a month, Kevin’s refund of more than $7,000 was released. From his first call to a refund in hand, it took about a month. Kevin put it best: “This is how the government is supposed to work.”\n\nDavid Mitnick of Glen Rock: David and his wife, Shelly Berger-Mitnick, reached out to Gottheimer’s office for help with their federal tax refund and a penalty abatement request. After the IRS audited them and found them ineligible for the energy tax credit they listed, they learned they were actually eligible for the credit in the following year. David repaid the previous year’s federal income tax amount in full, requested a penalty abatement, and filed an amended return, but after more than eight months, no refund or decision came. Gottheimer’s office contacted TAS right away and worked with David and their CPA to get TAS the forms and documents it asked for. Two months after they first called, the IRS confirmed $4,427.59 for their penalty abatement and $20,413.78 for their federal tax refund, more than $24,800 in total was sent to them.\n\nIf you are experiencing an issue with a federal agency, Gottheimer and his Constituent Services Team are here to listen and help with VA benefits, Social Security, Medicare, passports, delayed IRS refunds, and more. Ansari. “These women and children deserve access to medical care, education, and safe living conditions. We must uphold our country’s commitments and ensure these families have a clear path permanent resettlement and asylum. I’m glad to lead this bipartisan effort with my colleague, Congressman Don Bacon, to deliver the answers and accountability our Afghan allies deserve.”\n\n“We made a commitment to the Afghan allies who stood alongside our servicemembers, and we have an obligation to honor it,” said Rep. Bacon. “We need clear answers about the care these families are receiving, particularly women and children, and the steps being taken to ensure their safe and orderly resettlement.”\n\nWith Afghan families enduring prolonged stays at CAS, the lawmakers are demanding accountability for the conditions they face and the services available to them. The letter calls for answers on access to essential maternal and OB-GYN care for pregnant women, routine pediatric services for young children, and safe, adequate living conditions. It also urges the provision of structured educational programming, English-language instruction, and recreational activities to support children’s development and well-being. Additionally, the lawmakers demand transparency around proposed third-country transfers, including clear assurances that any agreements uphold U.S. humanitarian standards, protect Afghan families’ well-being, and provide concrete pathways to safe, supported resettlement.\n\n“More than 1,000 Afghan allies are waiting at Camp As Sayliyah, and most of them are women and children. They include family members of U.S. service members, and every one of them was brought there on an American promise. Representatives Ansari and Bacon are asking the right questions: Are pregnant women getting care? Are children learning? Is there a real path to resettlement? These families have kept their word to us, and they deserve clear answers and a way forward. AfghanEvac is grateful to every member who signed on,” said Shawn VanDiver, President and Founder of AfghanEvac.\n\n“Last year, my team and I were at Camp As Sayliyah (CAS) helping secure flights and resettlement for hundreds of our wartime allies. Many of our allies, including the family members of U.S. veterans and service members, are still waiting for a safe path forward and still depend on health care and education at the camp,” said Andrew Sullivan, Executive Director of No One Left Behind. “We applaud this bipartisan recognition that a safe resolution for these allies, reached by Congress and the executive branch working in partnership, is in America’s best interest,” said Andrew Sullivan, Executive Director of No One Left Behind.\n\nAnsari’s letter was cosigned by Representatives Don Bacon (NE-02), Jason Crow (CO-06), María Elvira Salazar (FL-27), Stephen F. In particular, we wish to learn more about the conditions faced by the hundreds of women and the young children currently in processing at the facility, and to request an update on plans for their safe resettlement.\n\nThese individuals were brought out of Afghanistan on U.S.-provided flights with the promise and understanding that CAS would serve as a short-term transit hub for temporary stay in the final stages of their processing for secure resettlement to the United States. With this sacred promise to the heroes who supported our forces in Afghanistan at the heart of our inquiry, we want to ensure that the most vulnerable among those at CAS receive the necessary processing support, health care, and clear communications on their next steps.\n\nHealth and Support Services for Women and Children\n\nGiven the extended stays for many families, maintaining adequate specialized care remains a priority. We request an assessment of the medical services available at CAS, particularly maternal and OBGYN health resources for pregnant women and routine pediatric care for young children. Ensuring appropriate living conditions and consistent medical oversight for these families is essential as their immigration processing moves forward.\n\nEducational Opportunities and Developmental Support for Children\n\nBeyond immediate health and security considerations, we also ask for an evaluation of the educational and developmental resources available to the school-aged children residing at CAS. Given the extended length of stay for many families, access to structured educational programming, English language learning, and recreational activities is essential to minimize learning disruptions and support childhood development. Ensuring there are routine learning environments at the facility not only helps prepare these children for integration into American schools and communities, but also provides critical stability and psychological support during a period of prolonged transition.\n\nPathways to Final Resettlement\n\nClear and transparent communication regarding resettlement pathways is vital for maintaining the trust of our allies now and in future engagements. We ask for clarification on the open U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) P-1/P-2 applications and family reunification cases at CAS. Additionally, we request information on how the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security are handling any proposed third-country transfers to ensure the underlying bilateral agreements align with U.S. humanitarian standards and provide established resettlement support in the receiving country.\n\nTo inform Congress’ collaboration with your departments to shape an effective path forward, we\n\nrequest your response addressing the following questions by November 27, 2026:\n\nWhat medical care is available for the Afghan evacuees at CAS, particularly maternal and OBGYN health resources for pregnant women and routine pediatric care for young children?\n\nWhat learning support is available to school aged children? What cultural and educational resources are available to prepare adults for employment and resettlement in the United States?\n\nHow many individuals have ongoing USRAP referrals? What resources do your departments need to ensure all these individuals can renew their requisite documents and medical panels?\n\nWhat specific steps are your departments taking to communicate the status of resettlement options (including USRAP and third country agreements) to the individuals at CAS?\n\nThank you for your continued work to uphold U.S. national security by fulfilling our commitments to Afghan allies and their families. We look forward to working with your departments to ensure a swift, safe, and organized resolution for those at CAS.\n\nSincerely,\n\nYassamin Ansari\n\nMember of Congress\n\nFollow @RepYassAnsari on all social media platforms and visit Ansari.House.gov to learn more.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

They called for the Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security to immediately investigate the Oct. 7 incident in Hillsboro, identify the agents involved, and preserve all evidence, so that those responsible may be disciplined.\n\n“Without videos from bystanders, observers, journalists, and protestors, the public would never know the full scale of federal retaliation against those who seek to document ICE activity,” the lawmakers wrote.\n\nBonamici, Wyden, Merkley, and Dexter also recently raised concerns about the lack of access to counsel for individuals detained by ICE and what appear to be new protocols for bypassing the Portland ICE facility entirely. That letter can be found here.\n\nThe full letter about the Oct. 7 incident can be read here and below:\n\nDear Inspector General Cuffari:\n\nWe write to request an investigation into an alarming incident that occurred on October 7, 2026, in which U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents harassed, intimidated, and retaliated against a couple in Hillsboro, Oregon for engaging in First Amendment activities. The incident occurred when our constituents observed and recorded ICE agents in a supermarket parking lot. Soon thereafter, multiple masked ICE agents in three vehicles recklessly tailed the couple, boxed them in, and dangerously vandalized their vehicle by repeatedly stabbing and puncturing one of their tires before driving away.1\n\nICE agents cannot act with impunity. The First Amendment protects the right to observe, gather information about, and record law enforcement officers performing their duties in public.2 These constitutional protections are necessary for the public to learn about and freely debate the government’s actions, including potential misconduct, and demand accountability when necessary.\n\nSince President Trump returned to office in January 2025, federal ICE agents across the country have repeatedly failed to respect rights afforded under the Constitution, especially the First Amendment. We have seen many documented cases of excessive use of force and intimidation tactics by ICE in Oregon, including federal agents needlessly deploying tear-gas and other projectiles against peaceful community members as well as driving erratically and verbally threatening legal observers. This pattern of irresponsible and illegal behavior from federal agents is also evident across the country. For example, federal agents in Memphis, Tennessee harassed observers by swerving at them, tailing them, boxing them in, and pulling them over without reasonable suspicion; sitting outside of their homes; and assaulting and arresting them.3 In Los Angeles, federal agents fired crowd control weapons into the heads and other sensitive areas of observers, journalists, and protestors. A judge later granted an injunction against this behavior4 and found that the plaintiffs have plausibly alleged that DHS had a policy of retaliating against people who record the activities of agents.5\n\nMost troubling, federal immigration agents killed Alex Pretti while he was peacefully recording and protesting ICE’s actions.6 Through all of this, the Trump administration has repeatedly covered up officer misconduct and obstructed investigations.7 To this day, there is no evidence that the federal government has meaningfully investigated Mr. Pretti’s killing, with his parents noting that “at every turn, they have ignored us, misled us and shielded Alex’s killers.”8 This reckless behavior and senseless violence endangers everyone across the country and does not advance ICE’s mission of enforcing immigration laws to preserve national security and public safety.\n\nWithout videos from bystanders, observers, journalists, and protestors, the public would never know the full scale of federal retaliation against those who seek to document ICE activity.\n\nWe hereby demand that your offices immediately undertake an investigation of the October 7, 2026, incident in Hillsboro, Oregon outlined above. Please identify the ICE agents involved and preserve all relevant evidence so the officers can be disciplined and prosecuted as appropriate.\n\nFurther, we request that you undertake a comprehensive investigation of the pervasive pattern of ICE agents acting unlawfully and retaliating against individuals exercising their First Amendment rights. We ask that you work with Congress to make lasting changes to ICE training, oversight, and accountability. The rights of our constituents must not be jeopardized any longer.\n\nSincerely,", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

These purchases will benefit communities and rural economies across Oregon by supporting domestic production and distribution of these agricultural goods during periods of significant market disruption and economic uncertainty.\n\n“Our fisheries and farms deliver incredible products all around the world and are the lifeblood of our communities,” said Merkley, who led the Oregon delegation in pressing USDA to include hazelnuts and whiting in its latest food purchase. “This announcement ensures Oregon’s harvesters, processors, and producers will receive critical financial assistance needed to continue operating and providing services here in Oregon and beyond. I am elated the USDA has decided to make these purchases—this is a win for communities across our state.”\n\n“Iconic state industries like agriculture and fishing count on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to do its job and support Oregonians working hard to keep producing their world-class goods,” said Wyden. “I’m glad the full-court press from the delegation has unlocked this win for Oregonians fishing Pacific whiting and growing hazelnuts.”\n\n“Oregonians know that hazelnuts and seafood are some of the state’s most popular and delicious products,” said Bonamici. “Our growers and producers work tirelessly and bolster the local economy. This work included replacing deteriorated culverts with bridges and modern culverts that help threatened species like steelhead trout move through local waterways. In February 2024, NRCS approved and obligated $1,074,887 to reimburse TSWCD for their work.\n\nAs of early September 2026, NRCS had only paid $543,837 of the over $1.07 million they had promised to TSWCD. This $531,000 shortfall has severely challenged TSWCD’s budget and would have stuck the taxpayers of Washington County with the bill. Following outreach from the Oregon delegation, NRSC honored its commitment and released the final sum to TSWCD.\n\n“When Oregonians make a promise, we keep it. The Congressman highlighted the project as a model for supporting American energy production and driving economic growth in local communities across Southern Arizona, including Eloy. Once complete, Kitt Solar will deliver up to 100 megawatts of clean electricity paired with advanced battery storage, enough to power approximately 32,000 Arizona homes. The project supported nearly 500 well-paying jobs at peak construction earlier this year, while boosting business for local restaurants, markets, and small businesses throughout Eloy.\n\n\"Arizona’s energy needs are growing rapidly, and projects like Kitt Solar are essential to meeting that demand while creating good-paying jobs and attracting investment to our communities,\" said Congressman Juan Ciscomani. \"It was inspiring to witness the progress underway in Eloy and to learn about the opportunities this project brings to local families. In Congress, I have worked to protect the incentives that make initiatives like Kitt Solar possible. We need an all-of-the-above approach that keeps energy affordable, reliable, and made in America.\"\n\nCiscomani has been a vocal advocate for protecting domestic energy production of all kinds and ensuring American businesses have the certainty to invest and expand. During the debate on the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, he signed multiple letters to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith and House leadership, urging them to safeguard clean energy tax incentives and prevent abrupt disruptions that could hinder growth.\n\nIn Congress, Ciscomani also spearheaded efforts to support American energy production and strengthen domestic manufacturing, particularly for battery storage components. The letter demands that the Department of Defense right this wrong and support these evacuated military families.\n\nThe members of Congress also asked the Secretary how much it would cost to repair the severe damage to NSA Bahrain and how the incapacitation of the base has impacted U.S. operations in the Iran War and the wider Middle East.\n\nThe letter is co-led by Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17), Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18), and Senator Richard Blumenthal (CT). The letter signatories are members of the House Armed Services Committee, the Senate Armed Services Committee, or are members of the Democratic Veterans Caucus.\n\nThe letter reads, “President Trump launched the Iran War on February 28th before evacuating the roughly 8,300 military personnel, DoD civilians, and their families stationed at NSA Bahrain. Families were authorized to evacuate only after the war started, subjecting them to the Iranian retaliatory strikes that heavily damaged the base. Since March, these evacuees have been under constant emotional, financial, and psychological stress... While the Department of Defense has provided safe haven entitlements to offset the cost of living for evacuees, this funding is scheduled to be terminated in November or after the 180th day of receiving the entitlement, before many have found permanent housing and transportation.”\n\nThe members continue, “Because NSA Bahrain was a critical logistics hub for U.S. Central Command, we require a better understanding of how the severe damage to the base has impacted U.S. operations… We have significant concerns about the morale and welfare of the troops deployed to the region, especially in light of the reporting on the conditions onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln, which both served record breaking deployments.”\n\nSpecifically, the members requested answers by November 13, 2026 to the following questions:\n\nWhy was the Navy’s request to extend the safe haven entitlements for evacuees denied?\n\nWho made this decision?\n\nWhy are safe haven entitlements for evacuees being terminated before the arrival of household goods?\n\nWhat will the Department of Defense do to ensure that evacuees from NSA Bahrain are not paying out of pocket for living expenses incurred by the evacuation?\n\nWhat processes, if any, are in place for evacuees to receive reimbursement for expenses incurred, and how many reimbursement cases are pending?\n\nGiven the damage to NSA Bahrain, which logistic hub (or hubs) has the Department of Defense been using amidst the Iran War?\n\nWhat has been the operational impact of the loss of NSA Bahrain?\n\nDoes the Department of Defense intend to repair and rebuild NSA Bahrain?\n\nIf so, how much is the expected cost for such work?\n\nWhat is the financial cost of the damage to NSA Bahrain?\n\nThe House signatories of the letter are: Reps. Chris Deluzio (PA-17, co-lead), Pat Ryan (NY-18, co-lead), Wesley Bell (MO-01), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Herb Conaway (NJ-03), Joe Courtney (CT-02), Jason Crow (CO-06), Sarah Elfreth (MD-03), John Garamendi (CA-08), Maggie Goodlander (NH-02), Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Sara Jacobs (CA-51), Bill Keating (MA-09), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Ted Lieu (CA-36), Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), Adam Smith (WA-09), Eric Sorensen (IL-17), Marilyn Strickland (WA-10), Mike Thompson (CA-04), Derek Tran (CA-45), Eugene Vindman (VA-07), and George Whitesides (CA-27).\n\nThe Senate signatories of the letter are: Sens. Richard Blumenthal (CT, co-lead), Tammy Duckworth (IL), Kirstin Gillibrand (NY), Mazie Hirono (HI), Jacky Rosen (NV), Elizabeth Warren (MA).\n\nThe full text of the letter is below and is linked here.\n\nDear Secretary Hegseth:\n\nWe write to raise concern over reporting that servicemembers and their families are continuing to face significant hardship following their evacuation from Naval Support Activity Bahrain (NSA Bahrain) in March this year. Additionally, we seek to better understand how the incapacitation of NSA Bahrain has impacted U.S. operations in the Iran War and the broader Middle East. In an August town hall, Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Daryl Caudle, said that the Navy would not be using NSA Bahrain for the foreseeable future. This is significant not only for the thousands of servicemembers and their families personally involved, but also because NSA Bahrain is a critical logistics hub that has served as the headquarters for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet since 1995.\n\nServicemembers and Their Families are Not Receiving Adequate Support\n\nAs you know, President Trump launched the Iran War on February 28th before evacuating the roughly 8,300 military personnel, DoD civilians, and their families stationed at NSA Bahrain. Families were authorized to evacuate only after the war started, subjecting them to the Iranian retaliatory strikes that heavily damaged the base. Since March, these evacuees have been under constant emotional, financial, and psychological stress. Some have had to move across continents, stay in temporary lodging for months, enroll their children in a new school mid-year, pay out of pocket for significant costs associated with a move and more, all often without access to belongings they were forced to leave behind. While the Department of Defense has provided safe haven entitlements to offset the cost of living for evacuees, this funding is scheduled to be terminated in November or after the 180th day of receiving the entitlement, before many have found permanent housing and transportation.\n\nIn a recent town hall, Navy officials relayed that your Department of Defense leadership had denied a request to extend the safe haven entitlements, and that each evacuee had to seek individual approval from the Acting Secretary of the Navy. This is unacceptable. To make matters worse, the signing of a lease is being used as a triggering event for termination of the safe haven entitlement. This is bad policy. Although a family may have signed a lease for a permanent residence, they may still have to use a rental vehicle or stay in temporary lodging while they wait for their household goods to arrive from overseas. Requiring servicemembers to pay out of pocket for expenses that were forced upon them by your mismanagement of the Iran War is wrong. You must fix this.\n\nLoss of NSA Bahrain and U.S. Presence in the Middle East\n\nAs the Iran War reaches the ninth month, our constituents have expressed increasing concern about the cost of the conflict and the lack of transparency surrounding U.S. operations and strategic goals in the region. Because NSA Bahrain was a critical logistics hub for U.S. Central Command, we require a better understanding of how the severe damage to the base has impacted U.S. operations. In August, the New York Times reported that the U.S Navy is now resupplying from Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean 2,200 miles away from the Persian Gulf. We have significant concerns about the morale and welfare of the troops deployed to the region, especially in light of the reporting on the conditions onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln, which both served record breaking deployments.\n\nIn executing the Congress’s oversight authority under Article I of the Constitution, we request answers to the following questions by November 13, 2026.\n\nWhy was the Navy’s request to extend the safe haven entitlements for evacuees denied?\n\nWho made this decision?\n\nWhy are safe haven entitlements for evacuees being terminated before the arrival of household goods?\n\nWhat will the Department of Defense do to ensure that evacuees from NSA Bahrain are not paying out of pocket for living expenses incurred by the evacuation?\n\nWhat processes, if any, are in place for evacuees to receive reimbursement for expenses incurred, and how many reimbursement cases are pending?\n\nGiven the damage to NSA Bahrain, which logistic hub (or hubs) has the Department of Defense been using amidst the Iran War?\n\nWhat has been the operational impact of the loss of NSA Bahrain?\n\nDoes the Department of Defense intend to repair and rebuild NSA Bahrain?\n\nIf so, how much is the expected cost for such work?\n\nWhat is the financial cost of the damage to NSA Bahrain?\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

The findings raise questions about the state's management of taxpayer funds intended to provide health care to millions of vulnerable Californians.\n\nAccording to an October 15 report from the California State Auditor, DHCS identified approximately 28,000 Medi-Cal providers as high risk for potentially improper billing during fiscal year 2024–2025. Despite these warning signs, the department had not initiated referrals or investigations for more than 26,000 of those providers, which collectively accounted for at least $12 billion in Medi-Cal services.\n\nThe audit also found that DHCS identified more than $2 billion in provider overpayments between fiscal years 2020 and 2025, approximately $300 million of which remain unrecovered.\n\n“California taxpayers are pouring billions of dollars into Medi-Cal, and they deserve to know that money is being spent responsibly, not lost to fraud, waste, and bad oversight,” said Congressman Gallagher. “The State Auditor’s findings raise serious questions about why thousands of high-risk providers went without further investigation and why hundreds of millions of dollars in overpayments remain unrecovered. We cannot afford to ignore these warning signs. Period. Medi-Cal must protect the vulnerable Californians who depend on it, and that starts with holding the system accountable, rooting out fraud, and ensuring taxpayer dollars go toward legitimate patient care.”\n\nThe audit's findings come as California faces additional federal scrutiny over its management of Medi-Cal. On October 20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it would defer an additional $1.2 billion in federal Medicaid payments to California over concerns about documentation supporting certain program expenditures.\n\nThe lawmakers are requesting information about DHCS's efforts to strengthen oversight of Medi-Cal, investigate potentially fraudulent billing practices, and recover improper payments.\n\n“Medi-Cal provides critical care to millions of Californians, and every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that is not available to help our most vulnerable citizens access the care they need,” said Congressman Obernolte. “California taxpayers deserve to know that their money is being used wisely and appropriately. Stronger oversight is necessary to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse while protecting the patients who depend on this critical program.”\n\nGallagher joined Representatives Ken Calvert (CA-41), Tom McClintock (CA-05), David Valadao (CA-22), Young Kim (CA-40), and Vince Fong (CA-20) in signing the letter led by Obernolte.\n\nThe lawmakers are calling for greater transparency and stronger accountability to protect taxpayer dollars while preserving access to care for Californians who rely on Medi-Cal.\n\nRead the full letter HERE.\n\n###\n\nClick the link here to subscribe to Rep. La comunicación planteó preocupaciones sobre los nuevos criterios de residencia, el uso de récords administrativos y las restricciones a la recopilación de información sobre raza, origen étnico y orientación sexual. En sus comentarios específicos sobre Puerto Rico, el Comisionado Residente detalla cómo estos cambios podrían afectar el conteo de nuestra población.\n\n“Nos preocupa que esta propuesta limite la información demográfica esencial que se recopila sobre nuestra población. Sin datos precisos, se hace más difícil identificar las necesidades de nuestras comunidades y priorizar lo básico: los servicios, los recursos y la atención que nuestra gente necesita. Por eso, me opuse a esta regla y solicité su retiro”, expresó el Comisionado Residente.\n\nEntre sus señalamientos, Hernández advierte que utilizar únicamente récords contributivos federales podría excluir a residentes bona fide de Puerto Rico que no tienen obligación de radicar una planilla federal. Por ello, plantea considerar también información del Departamento de Hacienda, incluidos los formularios W-2PR. Asimismo, señala que los sistemas automatizados podrían dejar fuera hogares en comunidades rurales cuyas direcciones no siguen los formatos convencionales.\n\nLos comentarios también cuestionan las posibles restricciones a las preguntas sobre raza y origen hispano, cuya información permite identificar a las comunidades puertorriqueñas dentro y fuera de la Isla. Además, señalan la importancia de considerar los movimientos de personas entre Puerto Rico y los estados para evitar que sean omitidas o contadas incorrectamente.\n\nLa importancia de un conteo preciso queda reflejada en los resultados de 2020. Según el propio Negociado del Censo, en el Censo de 2020 se estima que aproximadamente 217,000 residentes de Puerto Rico, equivalentes al 7.1% de la población estimada en hogares, fueron omitidos del conteo.\n\nLos datos del Censo ayudan al Gobierno de Puerto Rico a planificar los servicios que necesitan los municipios y las comunidades, revisar los distritos legislativos y administrar programas federales. Por eso, Hernández plantea que las reglas del Censo 2030 deben evitar que Puerto Rico y su población queden insuficientemente representados en la información oficial.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

I strongly support Congressman Tom Kean Jr.’s EMS SUPPORT Act because it recognizes that reliable emergency medical services are not a luxury - they are an essential public service. By creating new federal funding opportunities for staffing, training, equipment, and infrastructure, this legislation would provide meaningful support to the men and women who answer the call when our communities need them most, while helping ease the financial pressure on local taxpayers. Since taking office in 2023, he has secured more than $5.5 million in federal funding for projects across the county.\n\n“From first responders to students to families, I am always fighting for Warren County,” said Congressman Kean. “The federal funding I secured across these projects will work to increase public safety, both in schools and communities at large, as well as foster the heart of Warren County, agriculture. I will continue to advocate for the residents of Warren County and New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District.\"\n\n“Today was a great day for Warren County. I want to thank Congressman Kean, who has been so successful at bringing federal tax dollars back to Warren County,” said Warren County Commissioner Director Lori Ciesla. “Our priorities have become his priorities, and he has delivered a tremendous amount for our county and our local communities. These projects will provide crucial services and couldn't have happened without the Congressman's leadership.”\n\n“I want to thank Congressman Tom Kean Jr. for the work he does every day to make sure Warren County’s needs are heard and our communities have a strong advocate in Washington,” said Warren County Commissioner James R. Kern III. “Securing federal support takes persistence, careful preparation, and close work with local partners. These investments will strengthen public safety, expand educational and workforce opportunities, and improve quality of life across Warren County. They will provide law enforcement and emergency responders with important resources and opportunities to prepare for the demands of their work, while supporting education and career development in agriculture. We are grateful to the Congressman and his staff who worked to bring this funding home.”\n\nKean Delivers $97,607 to Greenwich Township for School Resource Officer Vehicle and Equipment\n\nGreenwich Township will purchase a police vehicle to be utilized by the Township’s school resource officer to better ensure a safe, secure, and supportive school environment.\n\n“Congressman Kean is always accessible to us, he always responds to us, and he always personally answers our calls,” said Greenwich Township Mayor Robert Barsony. “I thank him for bringing Greenwich this funding and appreciate everything he does for us.”\n\n“I want to thank the Township, the Congressman, and the entire committee,” said School Resource Officer Kate Proscia-Berger. “I love the opportunity to be able to serve as school resource officer between both the elementary and middle school. It’s a pleasure every day to be able to make sure that I do anything I can to help keep these students safe.”\n\nKean Delivers $979,000 to Warren County Community College for the Agricultural Education and Training Center\n\nThis federal funding will be used to renovate the Center’s facilities to serve as a location for training students on vocational agriculture and culinary studies. This provides for workforce development opportunities and local economic growth, spurs innovation, opens the door to educational access, and broadens community engagement.\n\n“Congressman Kean and I have worked together to deliver for Warren County, and this nearly $979,000 in federal funding for the Community College’s Agricultural Education and Training Center is a perfect example of that partnership,” said New Jersey State Senator Doug Steinhardt. “Agriculture is the backbone of our local economy and way of life, and improving these facilities so students get real hands-on training in vocational agriculture and culinary skills will strengthen that tradition while building a skilled workforce right here at home. I’m glad to stand with Congressman Kean as he brings these federal dollars back to our community where they’ll make a lasting difference for our students, our farms, and our future.”\n\n“In many ways, food is an economic development activity. It’s a national security issue. The ability to create our own food here in Warren County for our residents is especially important,” said WCCC President Dr. Will Austin. “The Congressman has worked tirelessly for us, and he’s made a real difference in our community on projects like this one, which we’ve been working on since he was first elected. I thank the Congressman sincerely and admire everything he’s done for us.”\n\nKean Secures $750,000 for Warren County Law Enforcement Emergency Services Training Center\n\nThe funding will be used for the construction of a new Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Training Center to meet the ever increasing training demands upon Police, Fire and EMS service providers in Warren County. The lack of a suitable and centralized location for hosting the necessary classes places a hardship on planners, instructors, and attendees alike. The new facility will include both classroom space and training areas for multiple modes of training and hands-on activity.\n\n“This is something that’s long overdue in Warren County,” said Christopher Jones, President of the Warren County Police Chief's Association. “Public safety is one big collaborative effort, and in order for us to handle situations properly, we have to make sure we’re trained properly. With a facility like this, the training will be going to the next level. Thank you to the Congressman for his support and partnership.”\n\nKean Secures $656,406 for Hope Township Fire Engine Truck Replacement\n\nThe funding will be used to purchase a new fire engine for the Hope Township Volunteer Fire Department. Replacing the current engine, which is approximately 20 years old, is essential to maintaining dependable fire emergency response capabilities and protecting the residents of Hope. A new fire engine will improve reliability, reduce out-of-service time, enhance firefighter safety, and strengthen the Township’s capacity to respond to fires and other emergencies.\n\n“On behalf of all the residents of Hope Township, I want to thank Congressman Tom Kean for selecting Hope Township as one of the projects from within his district for funding in the federal budget,” said Hope Township Mayor Timothy McDonough. “The funding will be going toward a new fire truck which we desperately need.”\n\nIn addition to these four projects, Congressman Kean has secured more than $3 million for Warren County through the Community Project Funding process.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-04T12:49:32Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-04T12:50:20Z"}

With visitor arrivals declining and our businesses and families facing increasing economic pressure, the consequences of a prolonged suspension could be significant. Immediately following the announcement, I spoke directly with the White House, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, and House leadership about the suspension and the urgency of restoring the program. Secretary Mullin personally assured me that he would work with the CNMI to understand and address the concerns that led to the decision. I also wrote to President Trump requesting his personal intervention and an expedited review involving DHS, the Department of the Interior, and the Commonwealth government. EVS-TAP was established during his first administration, and I believe there is a path to resolving the outstanding concerns and restoring the program. Already, I have spoken with senior leaders in both the administration and Congress about the critical condition of the CNMI economy and the role the federal government has in preventing its collapse. Our tourism industry, government revenues, and the livelihoods of our people are all connected, and federal decisions affecting our economy must take those consequences seriously. EVS-TAP remains suspended, and there are procedures for addressing the security and law enforcement concerns that may arise under the program. The investment will double the facility’s treatment capacity, strengthening access to reliable water service for families, farmers, and businesses across seven Central Illinois counties: Shelby, Effingham, Montgomery, Fayette, Cumberland, Christian, and Clay.\n\n“Our farmers, small businesses, and rural communities are the backbone of America, and they deserve the infrastructure necessary to thrive. I’m proud to have secured $4.5 million to support this critical expansion in Illinois’ 15th District,” said Congresswoman Mary Miller. “This investment will meet growing demand and strengthen the essential infrastructure that families and businesses across our rural communities will depend on for generations.”\n\nBackground:\n\nFounded in 1989, EJ Water Cooperative is the largest rural water cooperative in Illinois, serving a rural population of more than 48,000 residents. The Delbert Mundt Water Treatment Plant was constructed in 2010 near Beecher City and serves EJ Water’s fastest-growing western service area.\n\nAs demand continues to increase, EJ Water has expanded its infrastructure to support rural communities, including the construction of a 250-million-gallon reservoir in 2023. The cooperative also works with smaller municipalities facing aging or inadequate water treatment facilities, helping provide dependable, affordable water service to underserved communities throughout Central Illinois.", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

Washington has enough monuments to what government can build. We spent this Congress creating room for what Americans can build instead.”\n\nRead the full piece below:\n\n— —\n\nWashington has a peculiar definition of progress. A new program is an accomplishment. A new regulation is action. A new federal office means somebody is finally doing something. That is why some of the most important work Republicans did this Congress involved undoing that so-called “progress.”\n\nFor decades, Washington accumulated authority one seemingly reasonable decision at a time. Congress delegated power to an agency full of faceless bureaucrats. The agency wrote a rule. The rule became another permit to obtain, expense to absorb, or decision somebody in Washington had already made for you.\n\nGovernment grows quietly that way. Freedom disappears just as quietly. House Republicans of the 119th Congress came to Washington with the idea that the most consequential thing government can do is return freedom to the American people. Yes, we passed over 900 pieces of legislation this Congress, the second most in U.S. history, but that matters much less than what changed once the votes were cast.\n\nHouse Republicans have overturned 23 federal rules through the Congressional Review Act, the most in history and more successful repeals than every previous Congress combined. In one session, we have turned a little-used oversight law into one of Washington’s most powerful tools for permanently returning authority from federal regulators to the people they regulate.\n\nWashington is accustomed to ratchets that turn in one direction. Government expands, the bureaucracy adjusts, and everyone learns to live with the new baseline. We turned the ratchet backward.\n\nDemocrats would have let the 2017 tax cuts expire and taken more money out of Americans’ pockets. We made them permanent, cut taxes on tips and overtime, delivered new relief for seniors, and restored incentives to invest and build in America.\n\nAmericans have already claimed more than $82 billion in individual tax relief. Over the decade, the tax changes we enacted are projected to give $4.6 trillion back to families and businesses, and the laws enacted cut projected federal spending by roughly $1.1 trillion, meaning Washington will take less of Americans’ money.\n\nPeople take bigger chances when they know more of the reward will still belong to them. That is how opportunity compounds and how countries grow. But opportunity can only flourish where freedom is protected by order and the rules still mean something.\n\nA limited government is not a weak government. It does a smaller number of things, and it does the essential ones well. It must defend the country, enforce the law, protect basic rights, and establish rules that allow a free society to function.\n\nSecuring a nation’s borders is among the most basic responsibilities that government has. Democrats chose to dismantle our border and turn lawlessness into policy. Republicans flipped the script and have not allowed a single illegal immigrant to be released into the country in 16 months.\n\nThis Congress put the philosophy of limited government into practice across the economy. We gave small businesses tax certainty to hire and invest. We cleared regulatory barriers so manufacturers can expand, unleashed more American energy, and made it easier to build. None of these policies determines what Americans must do with their lives. They expand what Americans are free to do for themselves.\n\nThe alternative is government by permission slip. Washington chooses which industries deserve to grow, which products people may buy, which energy sources are acceptable, and how much of a worker’s success belongs to somebody else. There needs to be a line between the power government is granted by the people, and the freedom Americans deserve to keep.\n\nThat is the foundation the 119th Congress has spent two years laying.\n\nA foundation is not glamorous. Nobody walks through a finished house admiring the concrete underneath it, but everything built above depends on whether the foundation is strong.\n\nTax certainty. Regulatory relief. A secure border. American energy. Lower crime. More room to work, build and invest. These are not the finished house. They are what makes everything that comes next possible.\n\nI don’t call the 119th Congress the most successful because of the paper it produced. I say it because we changed the direction of the country. Washington has enough monuments to what government can build. We spent this Congress creating room for what Americans can build instead.\n\nThe government does not know what your life should look like. Neither do I, and that’s precisely the point — you do.", "collected_at": "2026-11-04T12:49:32Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-04T12:50:20Z"}

Congressman Jay Obernolte (CA-23) led members of the California delegation in sending a letter to California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Director Michelle Baass expressing concerns over the department's oversight of the Medi-Cal program following a recent report from the California State Auditor identifying deficiencies in its efforts to investigate potentially improper billing and recover overpayments.\n\nThe letter, signed by Representatives Ken Calvert (CA-41), Tom McClintock (CA-05), David Valadao (CA-22), Young Kim (CA-40), Vince Fong (CA-20), and James Gallagher (CA-01), requests information on the department's efforts to strengthen program oversight, address potentially fraudulent billing, and safeguard taxpayer dollars.\n\nAccording to the October 15 audit, DHCS identified approximately 28,000 Medi-Cal providers as high risk for potentially improper billing during fiscal year 2024–2025, but had not initiated referrals or investigations for more than 26,000 of them. These providers collectively accounted for at least $12 billion in Medi-Cal services during that period.\n\nThe audit also found that DHCS identified more than $2 billion in provider overpayments between fiscal years 2020 and 2025, approximately $300 million of which remain unrecovered.\n\nThe findings come amid additional federal scrutiny of California's Medi-Cal program. On October 20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it would defer an additional $1.2 billion in federal Medicaid payments to California over concerns regarding documentation supporting certain Medi-Cal expenditures.\n\n“Medi-Cal provides critical care to millions of Californians, and every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that is not available to help our most vulnerable citizens access the care they need,” said Congressman Jay Obernolte (CA-23). “The California State Auditor's findings raise serious concerns about the state's oversight of this program, particularly the failure to investigate more than 26,000 providers identified as high risk for potentially improper billing. California taxpayers deserve to know that their money is being used wisely and appropriately. Stronger oversight is necessary to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse while protecting the patients who depend on this critical program.”\n\n“It’s critical that California take every measure possible to eliminate fraud in the Medi-Cal program. We owe it taxpayers to verify payments to Medi-Cal providers and ensure all of our resources are being dedicated to the actual health care needs of Californians,” said Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-41).\n\n“California’s Medi-Cal program is a critical lifeline for our most vulnerable, and every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that can’t go toward helping those in need,” said Congressman David Valadao (CA-22). “The California Department of Health Care Services has a responsibility to properly investigate fraudulent billing and improper payments, and I urge the agency to take immediate action to strengthen program oversight, hold bad actors accountable, and ensure taxpayer funds are being used appropriately.”\n\n“Medi-Cal is supposed to be a lifeline for California’s most vulnerable, not an opportunity for fraudsters to cash in at taxpayers’ expense,” said Congresswoman Young Kim (CA-40). “The fact that California failed to investigate thousands of providers flagged for potential fraud, despite those providers accounting for $12 billion in claims, raises serious questions about the state’s oversight efforts. Every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar that could have gone toward caring for seniors, mothers, and children who depend on the services Medi-Cal provides. Californians deserve answers, accountability, and assurance that their tax dollars are going where they’re needed most.”\n\n“Medi-Cal exists to protect our most vulnerable neighbors, and every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar taken from the patients and families who depend on it,” said Congressman Vince Fong (CA-20). \"$12 billion in potentially improper payments is a failure of basic oversight, and patients are the ones who pay the price for California’s mismanagement. Sacramento owes Californians real answers and immediate action to protect Medi-Cal for those who need it, and to keep it fiscally solvent for future generations.”\n\n“California taxpayers are pouring billions of dollars into Medi-Cal, and they deserve to know that money is being spent responsibly—not lost to fraud, waste, and bad oversight,\" said Congressman James Gallagher (CA-01). \"The State Auditor’s findings raise serious questions about why thousands of high-risk providers went without further investigation and why hundreds of millions of dollars in overpayments remain unrecovered. We cannot afford to ignore these warning signs. Period. Medi-Cal must protect the vulnerable Californians who depend on it, and that starts with holding the system accountable, rooting out fraud, and ensuring taxpayer dollars go toward legitimate patient care.”\n\nRead the full letter here.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

The funding comes from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, which helps improve roadway safety by investing in safety strategies to reduce serious traffic injuries and fatalities.\n\nThe project combines two tools to help improve emergency response on Santa Cruz roadways. It will test a cloud-based system that gives emergency vehicles priority at traffic signals, connected to the dispatch system, as well as a smaller medical response vehicle for calls that do not involve a fire, including traffic crashes. The City of Santa Cruz will evaluate whether these tools improve response times and care after crashes, particularly along roads with high rates of serious injuries and key routes to hospitals.\n\n“Every second counts for first responders when it comes to driving on our local roads and highways,” said Rep. Panetta. “This federal investment will allow the city of Santa Cruz to test potentially lifesaving technology to help emergency vehicles reach people more quickly and first responders provide timely, effective care. I’m proud to ensure that the federal government plays its part to help our local first responders do their job for the safety of communities in California’s 19th Congressional District.”\n\n“This grant will allow Santa Cruz to explore new ways to help first responders reach injured patients faster, provide lifesaving care, and improve roadway safety,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley. “I am grateful for Congressman Panetta’s support in delivering this significant federal investment to strengthen emergency response and make our community safer.”\n\n“Keeping our community safe is one of our most important responsibilities, and this investment gives Santa Cruz an exciting opportunity to strengthen how we respond to emergencies. We’re grateful to Congressman Panetta for securing this funding and recognizing the importance of investing in innovative solutions that can help save lives and make our streets safer for everyone. We’re excited to test these tools, evaluate their effectiveness, and identify opportunities to improve service to our community,” said Santa Cruz City Manager Matt Huffaker.\n\nThe SS4A grant program was established by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021. Since the program’s inception, the cities of Santa Cruz, Monterey, Paso Robles, and San Jose, together with Santa Cruz County, Santa Clara County, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, have received more than $28.7 million through the SS4A program.\n\nRep. Chip Roy and Josh Brecheen are seeking records from the U.S. Department of Justice and an investigation into whistleblower allegations involving Travis County District Attorney José Garza’s decision not to prosecute an Afghan national accused of felony solicitation of prostitution.\n\nThe lawmakers’ letter cites a September 14 whistleblower complaint from Major Joshua Mast concerning Afghan national Aminullah Amin. According to the lawmakers, Garza’s office declined to prosecute the solicitation charges on July 22, citing the “interest of justice.”\n\nAmin is embroiled in a custody dispute with Mast and his wife over a seven-year-old girl.\n\n“The complaint raises the question whether the charging decision may have been improperly influenced so that the accused in that case could continue his custody pursuit of [the] seven-year-old little girl in our nation’s highest court,” the congressmen wrote.\n\nThe custody dispute began after an Afghan baby was found in the rubble of a rural compound raided by U.S. Army Rangers.\n\nThe State Department helped place her with an Afghan couple identified as relatives, who raised her for 18 months while Joshua Mast and his wife obtained a Virginia adoption order without notifying them.\n\nAfter helping the Afghan family evacuate to the United States in 2021, Mast took custody of the girl. Lower Virginia courts ruled in the Afghan couple’s favor, but the state’s highest court sided with the Masts, citing a six-month statutory deadline for challenging the adoption.\n\nThe U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the Afghan couple’s appeal earlier this month.\n\nRoy (R–Austin) and Brecheen (R–OK) also request a review of evidence from two 2021 forensic extractions of phones used by Amin. The lawmakers say Mast’s complaint identifies potential investigative leads involving national security and immigration screening.\n\n“The Complaint identifies leads involving alleged Taliban contacts, possible al-Qaeda connections, and eleven distinct SIM-card identifiers associated with one of the phones,” they wrote.\n\nThis letter follows a June committee inquiry into Garza’s immigration-related policies.\n\nRoy, along with U.S. Reps. Jim Jordan (R–OH) and Tom McClintock (R–CA), wrote to Garza earlier this year “concerning his office’s immigration-related policies and their consequences for public safety and the rule of law.”\n\n“Under your leadership, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office has routinely undermined the rule of law under the guise of safeguarding the public,” the congressmen wrote. “You previously committed to ‘[p]rotect immigrant communities’ by ‘creat[ing] a [district attorney’s] office that considers the impact of charges and convictions’ on foreign nationals and ‘ensures that the sentence imposed is not unduly harsh for any class of people.’”\n\nRoy and Brecheen raised concerns that Garza is continuing a “soft-on-crime” approach that could also threaten national security.\n\n“Shielding criminal aliens from immigration enforcement in Travis County or elsewhere undermines public safety and impedes enforcement of federal law,” Roy and Brecheen wrote.\n\n“Above all, unresolved questions about potential terrorism connections involving a foreign national arrested for an apparent felony and pursuing custody of a child in American courts demand prompt examination.”\n\nGarza has not responded to a request for comment regarding Roy and Brecheen’s accusations against him.", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

This work included replacing deteriorated culverts with bridges and modern culverts that help threatened species like steelhead trout move through local waterways. In February 2024, NRCS approved and obligated $1,074,887 to reimburse TSWCD for their work.\n\nAs of early September 2026, NRCS had only paid $543,837 of the over $1.07 million they had promised to TSWCD. This $531,000 shortfall has severely challenged TSWCD’s budget and would have stuck the taxpayers of Washington County with the bill. Following outreach from the Oregon delegation, NRSC honored its commitment and released the final sum to TSWCD.\n\n“When Oregonians make a promise, we keep it. The federal government should be held to the same standard,” said Rep. Salinas. “Tualatin Soil and Water did the work to improve our waterways, and Washington County taxpayers should never have been left holding the bag. I’m glad we got this money out the door and where it belongs.”\n\n“Supporting threatened species and their habitats reflects Oregon values and our commitment to environmental protection, and I was grateful when the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District secured federal funds to improve fish habitat in Washington County,” said Rep. Bonamici. “Unfortunately, the Trump administration paid only about half of the promised funding, leaving Washington County taxpayers to pick up the balance. I’m glad that my colleagues and I were able to help resolve this issue and secure all the funds the water conservation district needed for the project.\"\n\n“Thanks to our efforts, this funding is finally moving forward and will help ensure the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District can continue its work to improve waterways in Washington County,” said Sen. Merkley.“Oregon’s native fish are the lifeblood of our state, supporting the health and vitality of our communities, local economies, and Tribes who have been here since time immemorial. I’ll keep pushing to secure the necessary federal funds to protect our state’s ecosystems for generations to come.”\n\n“I’m glad the full-court press by the delegation unlocked these resources promised by the federal government to the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District,” Wyden said. “These funds will keep waterways improvements on track, helping with water quality and fish habitat alike in Washington County.”\n\n“The Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District much appreciates Congresswoman Salinas and her staff for their work in helping the District receive payment from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a successful fish habitat project in the Gales Creek watershed of Washington County,” said Dean P. Moberg, Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District Treasurer. “We were impressed with the staff's quick understanding of the payment problem we faced, and we are grateful for the Congresswoman's exceptional response. The letter Congresswoman Salinas provided, along with Congresswoman Bonamici and Senators Merkley and Wyden, was surely instrumental in cutting through red tape and securing the payment of over one half million dollars in federal assistance that had been held up for this project. This payment will greatly facilitate the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District's work in helping residents of Washington County conserve natural resources with voluntary and locally led projects.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

San Diego has served as a primary hub for incoming Afghan refugees, with nearly 5,000 resettling in the region. The Members also expressed concern over another flight with a mass deportation of Iranians — the first since the U.S. launched its military conflict against Iran— and that relatives of Afghans who helped American troops could be among those on board.\n\n“Our nation made a promise to stand by Afghans who risked their lives and their families’ safety to stand by U.S. service members,” the Members wrote, adding that deporting them “is a violation of that promise and our moral obligations to the Afghan community who stood alongside our troops.”\n\nThe Members emphasized the well-documented danger awaiting deportees. The State Department lists Afghanistan as a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” country, and for those who aided U.S. forces, “their assistance to U.S. troops puts a target on these individuals and their families to this day.” They detail the torture, detention, and extrajudicial killing of dissidents and LGBTQ persons, as well as the severe repression of women — noting that women and LGBTQ refugees could be on the flight.\n\nThe Members also raised alarm over reports that Iranians, including women, Christian converts, and pro-democracy activists, may be deported to Iran, where they face imprisonment, torture, and a possible death sentence. “Sending people who sought protection from the Islamic Republic of Iran back to a war zone and a repressive regime is unconscionable,” they wrote. They cited how even President Trump has warned about the dangers faced by pro-democracy and anti-government protesters in Iran.\n\nThe Members stressed that routing a flight through a third country does not change U.S. obligations, and urged the Trump Administration to warn Pakistan that the U.S. will not accept its participation in sending deportees onward to the Taliban.\n\nThese individuals “came to the U.S. because they believed in its promise of democracy, religious freedom, and liberty,” the Members concluded, and “we must uphold those values and commitments, not abandon people to autocratic regimes.”\n\n“Sixty-six members of Congress, from both chambers, needed less than 24 hours to say what every veteran of the Afghanistan war already knows: you don’t hand the people who stood with our troops to the Taliban. When even the Taliban are voicing ‘serious concern’ about your deportation plan, you’ve lost the moral argument and the national security one. This flight isn’t immigration enforcement. It’s a betrayal with a boarding pass, and the whole world is watching whether America keeps its word. We are grateful to Rep. Peters for leading. Secretary Rubio and Secretary Mullin, ground this plane,” said Shawn VanDiver, U.S. Navy veteran and President and Founder of #AfghanEvac.\n\n\"Having effectively dismantled our protection system, this administration is set to deport vulnerable people back to Afghanistan and Iran, in violation of our human rights commitments and our nation's values,\" said Sarah Mehta, deputy director of immigration policy at the ACLU. \"So many of these men and women never had a meaningful opportunity to defend their claims and are now the casualties of this administration's assault on asylum. We thank Congressman Peters for his leadership and all the members standing against these unconscionable deportations back to persecution, torture, or even death.\"\n\nThe Members requested an immediate response. Peters has been a staunch advocate for the safe relocation, protection, and legal adjustment of Afghan wartime allies who served alongside U.S. forces. He is a cosponsor of the Enduring Welcome Act to codify the Office of the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts (CARE) within the State Department, and the Afghan Adjustment Act to help settle Afghans and their families who supported U.S. forces.\n\nIn September, Rep. Peters led a Congressional delegation on a letter to the Trump Administration urging them to reunite the families of U.S. service members with their loved ones stranded overseas, and to reconnect Afghans with immediate family already lawfully in the U.S. In July, he hosted a virtual town hall with Afghan allies stranded at the Camp As Sayliyah facility in Doha. And in February, Rep. Peters attended a shadow hearing where he highlighted the consequences of the Trump administration's decisions to freeze the U.S. refugee admissions program and eliminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

Juan Vargas (CA-52), Mike Levin (CA-49), and Sara Jacobs (CA-51), in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche amid the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) attempt to sanction voter rolls across California, including in San Diego County’s Registrars of Voters (ROV).\n\nThe DOJ demanded that San Diego’s ROV provide voter information for over 1,700 voters, including driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, and voter registration applications, within 48 hours, and withhold their ballots until their citizenship is confirmed. In its response, the County pushed back against several unsubstantiated claims and argued that the DOJ's probe violated several election laws.\n\nThe Members' letter reinforced the County’s claims and acknowledged that California’s registrars follow all state and federal election laws, including citizenship attestation and database verification through the California Secretary of State. They argued that the DOJ’s letter cites no legal authority to direct county ballot administration and that it violates the National Voter Registration Act’s (NVRA) 90-day quiet period against systematically removing voters from the rolls.\n\n“The information requested by DOJ is intended to confirm the department’s unsubstantiated allegations of noncitizen voting in California,” the Members noted, also pointing to the data cited by DOJ, which the Agency itself conceded “may be outdated or incomplete.”\n\nThe Members also stated that unverified fraud allegations do not give registrars authority to violate federal law by refusing to count the votes of people already deemed eligible. They added that the DOJ’s demand fails to explain who would determine citizenship status, how, or when, less than a week before Election Day.\n\n“The request from DOJ violates the NVRA, Voting Rights Act, California state law, and jeopardizes Californians’ constitutional right to vote,” the Members concluded, adding that “as Members of the California Congressional delegation, we commend the work of our state ROVs to ensure state and federal election laws are upheld.”\n\nRead the full letterhere.\n\nBackground: Over the past several weeks, the DOJ has escalated pressure on California before Election Day and made unsubstantiated claims that large numbers of illegal voters are on the rolls. Lee (PA-12) joined House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) and Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Ranking Member Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) in demanding answers from the Trump Administration over its failure to adequately enforce federal transparency laws governing corporations and union-busting consultants.\n\nIn aletter to Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) Director Elisabeth Messenger, the lawmakers raised serious concerns about widespread failures by employers and anti-union consultants to disclose how much money they spend attempting to influence workers' decisions to organize.\n\nToo often, when workers exercise their right to organize a union, corporations and bosses hire outside consultants to wage anti-union campaigns. Over the last several decades, union-avoidance has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. The latest analysis found that companies spend approximately $1.7 billion every year, including nearly $500 million on union-busting consultants, to break their organizing drives. Some consultants are reportedly paid $500 per hour or $4,000 per day for their services.\n\nUnder the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA), employers and consultants are required to file public reports about their matter because it allows workers to see how much their bosses are spending to influence their decision to unionize. However, for decades, employers and union-busting consultants have routinely failed to meet this requirement, allowing bosses and their consultants to operate in the shadows. Under the Trump Administration, the problem is only becoming worse. A recent watchdog report found that, as of August 8, 2026, nearly 60 percent of employers required to file a disclosure in 2025 have still not submitted their reports—the largest year-over-year decline on record.\n\n“Over the last several years, while worker organizing has skyrocketed, employers have increasingly responded with hostile anti-union campaigns, including by hiring well-compensated outside consultants. As more employers seek to quash their workers’ unionization drives, it is imperative that employer and consultant disclosure requirements under the LMRDA are robustly enforced by OLMS, so workers have a complete picture of who is attempting to influence their decision as they exercise their right to organize,” wrote the Members.\n\nTo determine whether OLMS is effectively carrying out its responsibility to enforce the LMRDA, the Members requested a response to their extensive questions by no later than November 16, 2026.\n\nTo read the full letter to OLMS Director Elisabeth Messenger, click here.", "collected_at": "2026-11-03T12:39:27Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-03T12:40:43Z"}

The letter came after reports that the company is using artificial intelligence (AI) to determine the “optimal price” for individual menu items at each of its locations and pushing franchisees to adopt these AI-based prices.\n\n“We are concerned that McDonald’s may be using AI to squeeze consumers into paying higher prices, and that its AI pricing tools may facilitate collusion between franchisees who should be operating as competitors,” wrote the lawmakers.\n\nU.S. Representatives Greg Casar (D-Texas), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill.), and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.) also signed the letter.\n\nAccording to recent reports, McDonald’s has developed an AI-based pricing tool that it may be using to recommend specific prices for each individual store, building off the massive trove of consumer data that Amazon has collected through its loyalty program and mobile app. For example, two McDonald’s-operated restaurants just two miles apart in Fresno, California reportedly charged prices that differed by as much as 21 percent for the same menu items. The lawmakers raised particular concerns about McDonald’s use of AI-based pricing at a time when food prices are rising nationwide and particularly at McDonald’s. One report found that certain McDonald’s menu prices doubled between 2014 and 2024, rising more than three times as fast as overall inflation and driving away customers who previously relied on McDonald’s for an affordable meal.\n\n“We are concerned that McDonald’s is using its extensive consumer data and algorithmic pricing tools to unfairly raise prices on consumers who are already struggling with high food and dining costs,” wrote the lawmakers.\n\nThe lawmakers also questioned McDonald’s for reportedly putting pressure on franchisees to adopt its pricing recommendations, including through new business standards and potential consequences for franchise renewals. They warned that encouraging competing franchisees to rely on a shared pricing tool informed by nonpublic data could undermine independent pricing decisions and raise antitrust concerns.\n\n“While McDonald’s asserts that using data and analytics to inform pricing is a standard business practice, pressuring competing franchisees to use a shared AI pricing tool built on nonpublic data is not a standard business practice, but rather a potential antitrust issue,” continued the lawmakers.\n\nThe lawmakers requested answers by November 16, 2026, on the data and algorithms used to generate pricing recommendations, the extent to which franchisees adopt those recommendations, the pressure McDonald’s places on franchisees to comply, and the company’s assessment of potential antitrust risks.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-04T12:49:32Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-04T12:50:20Z"}

Under the rule, PBMs — the middlemen that manage prescription drug benefits — and their affiliated brokers must give employers that fund their own workers’ health plans a written breakdown of all the money they expect to make. That breakdown is due both when a contract is signed or renewed and every six months afterward. Employers also get the right to audit those numbers to make sure they are accurate:\n\n“Where there's mystery, there's margin, and PBMs have made a fortune off both,” said Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger. “As a pharmacist for decades, I've watched these shadowy middlemen pad their pockets at the expense of patients, employers, and the community pharmacies that serve them. Employers footing the bill for their workers' healthcare have been kept in the dark about how PBMs really make their money. Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Sonderling, those days are over. Employers will finally see the hidden rebates, fees, and markups PBMs pocket — and they'll have the right to audit the books. That means better deals, lower prescription drug costs, and more money back in the pockets of American workers and their families.”\n\n“This is a win for every American worker who has ever paid too much at the pharmacy counter,” said Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling. “For years, PBMs have operated in the shadows, pocketing hidden fees while workers and employers were left in the dark. Today, President Trump is delivering the transparency Americans deserve – and putting American workers first.”\n\n“More transparency means more competition, and more competition means lower health care costs,” said Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “Today’s new rule represents a significant step forward in this Administration’s all-of-government effort to take the guesswork out of shopping for health care – an effort in which Labor, CMS, and numerous other agencies and departments all have important roles to play.”\n\nBACKGROUND:\n\nOn November 2, the U.S. Department of Labor finalized a rule of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the federal law that governs employer-sponsored health plans. The rule requires PBMs — the middlemen that negotiate drug prices and run prescription drug benefits for health plans — to disclose to employers exactly how they get paid. It covers large employers that pay for their workers’ healthcare directly instead of buying coverage from an insurance company. It also applies to the brokers and consultants tied to PBMs. President Trump first directed the Labor Department to propose stricter transparency rules in his April 15, 2025, executive order, “Lowering Drug Prices by Once Again Putting Americans First.”\n\nUnder the rule:\n\nPBMs must give employers a written breakdown of all the money they expect to make from their contract — when the contract is signed or renewed, and every six months after that, or every three months if the employer asks.\n\nFor the first time, PBMs must disclose three major sources of hidden profit:\n\nRebates and other payments from drug companies;\n\nThe “spread,” when a PBM charges a health plan more for a drug than it pays the pharmacy and keeps the difference; and\n\nFees PBMs take back from pharmacies after a prescription is filled.\n\nEmployers can audit the numbers to make sure they are accurate.\n\nThe rule applies to employers with roughly 100 or more employees or plan members.\n\nSelf-insured employer health plans cover about 90 million Americans. The Labor Department projects the rule will lower prescription drug costs for plans and participants by as much as $22 billion over 10 years. The rule takes effect January 4, 2027, and applies to plan years beginning on or after July 1, 2027.\n\nCongresswoman Harshbarger championed two bills that laid the groundwork for this rule:\n\nPBM Reform Act: Introduced in July 2025 with Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA), the bipartisan bill would require PBMs to give employers and patients semiannual reports on drug spending, rebates and formulary decisions, and would decouple PBM compensation from drug prices in Medicare Part D. Provisions of the bill helped shape the PBM reforms President Trump signed into law Feb. 3 as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026 — the law this rule implements. That law also requires PBMs to pass 100% of manufacturer rebates and fees through to employer plans for plan years beginning on or after August 3, 2028.\n\nPBM Sunshine and Accountability Act: Introduced in April 2023, the bill would require PBMs to report the rebates and fees they receive from drug manufacturers — including amounts they keep rather than pass through to health plans — and the payments they claw back from pharmacies, and would extend that reporting to employer group health plans. The Labor Department rule now requires PBMs to disclose many of the same categories of compensation directly to employers.\n\nCLICK HERE to read more.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-04T12:49:32Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-04T12:50:20Z"}

The letters come as President Trump criticized his former attorney’s $50 million agreement with Mr. Herrera as “totally obnoxious and outrageous,” and “not acceptable.”\n\nIn their letters, the lawmakers express concern that the timing of Ms. Habba-Mildon’s hiring and Mr. Herrera’s daughter’s contribution to MAGA Inc. raise questions about whether improper considerations, including quid pro quo or “pay-to-play” dynamics, may have affected President Trump’s decision to pardon him. These letters are part of a broader bicameral investigation led by Representative Min and Senator Welch into potential corruption surrounding President Trump’s decisions to grant presidential pardons.\n\nThe lawmakers write: “Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the President to ‘grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.’ The U.S. Supreme Court has characterized executive clemency as ‘an act of grace’ exercised for the ‘public welfare.’ President Trump’s use of this authority appears to deviate from this traditional purpose. Congress has a compelling interest in ensuring that the constitutional pardon power is exercised with fairness and transparency. Given these circumstances, we are seeking additional information to better understand the extent to which influence and access may have overridden the standard pardon review process.”\n\nIn August 2022, Mr. Herrera was criminally charged with providing $300,000 to a super political action committee (PAC) in violation of a campaign finance law barring contributions or donations by foreign nationals to U.S. federal, state, or local elections. Mr. Herrera financially supported the reelection campaign of Puerto Rico’s governor in exchange for her pledge to remove a top banking regulator who had scrutinized one of Mr. Herrera’s banks.\n\nAccording to public reporting, Ms. Mildon entered into an employment agreement with Mr. Herrera’s family in late 2025, while she was serving as an adviser at the Justice Department. She also previously served as President Trump’s personal lawyer and as the Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey. In the hiring contract, Mr. Velutini’s family agreed to pay her $50 million over four years to be general counsel at Concord Partners, a company set up by Mr. Velutini’s daughter days before she signed the contract. Ms. Mildon finalized the deal with Concord Partners while she was still serving at the Justice Department.\n\nMs. Mildon then began working for Concord Partners on January 1, 2026, while serving as a senior adviser to then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, overseeing U.S. attorneys. Two weeks later, Mr. Herrera received a pardon on January 15, 2026. Since President Trump’s election in November 2024, his 27-year-old daughter, a self-employed financial consultant, also donated $3.5 million to MAGA Inc., a Trump-supporting super PAC.\n\nRead and download the lawmakers’ full letters to Alina Habba-Mildon and Julio Herrera Velutini.\n\nIn May, Senator Welch and Rep. Min sent letters to 17 individuals who received pardons or commutations under circumstances that warrant further congressional scrutiny, including several individuals connected to major fraud schemes, financial crimes, and high-profile political or financial relationships tied to President Trump and his associates. The earlier letters sought information regarding the clemency process, including whether financial contributions, lobbyists, intermediaries, or personal connections played a role in securing presidential clemency.\n\nAmong the individuals who received letters are convicted fraudsters, political fundraisers, corporate executives, and wealthy donors, such as Changpeng Zhao, whose cases have generated public reporting suggesting unusual access to Trump’s network of political allies and associates, direct lobbying efforts, large political donations, or other concerning connections surrounding their clemency requests.\n\nThe lawmakers continued their investigation in June, sending four additional letters to the Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney, the White House Office of Records Management, the White House Pardon Czar, and the United States Secret Service. In October, the lawmakers initiated a probe into the influence of cabinet members, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, in Trump’s decision to pardon convicted felons.\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-04T12:49:32Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-04T12:50:20Z"}

I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.\n\nAlmost two years ago, Donald Trump was sworn into office in the same Capitol where he incited a violent mob to try and overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The days, weeks and months that followed were deeply challenging. MAGA extremists tried to break America. A flood-the-zone strategy was unleashed throughout the land. But our country is a resilient one.\n\nIn the face of great turmoil and uncertainty, House Democrats did not back down. Together, we stood in the breach, aggressively pushed back against the Trump Administration’s extremism and overwhelmingly turned the tide.\n\nIn the 119th Congress, House Democrats forcefully stood up for the American people and charted a path for dramatic change. We remained unified and as a Caucus repeatedly delivered. House Democrats:\n\n1. Exposed the harm done by the One Big Ugly Bill, relentlessly denouncing the largest cut to Medicaid in American history while Republicans provided massive tax breaks to their billionaire donors.\n\n2. Established a first-of-its-kind litigation task force to oppose the Trump Administration in court, helping win critical cases to uphold birthright citizenship, protect the right to vote by mail and stop the President from unilaterally deploying the National Guard to intimidate the American people.\n\n3. Led the fight for transparency and accountability in connection with the Epstein Files, partnering with the courageous and patriotic survivors while exposing the ongoing cover-up by the Department of Justice.\n\n4. Decisively won the healthcare battle in connection with the 43-day government shutdown, setting the stage for the House to pass a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits over the objection of Republican leadership.\n\n5. Refused to provide taxpayer dollars to Donald Trump’s violent mass deportation machine because we believe that immigration enforcement should be fair, just and humane.\n\n6. Repeatedly forced successful votes through historic use of the discharge petition, passing legislation to restore TPS for Haitian migrants, enforce the right to a swift negotiation of union contracts and repeal the Trump Administration’s Executive Order banning collective bargaining for over a million federal workers.\n\n7. Aggressively opposed the reckless and costly war of choice in Iran, which has skyrocketed gas prices while undermining our national security.\n\n8. Kept the pressure on corrupt and incompetent cabinet officials, forcing Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi to resign in disgrace.\n\n9. Obliterated the Republican gerrymandering scheme that MAGA extremists claimed would net 16 seats and thereby made sure there was a free and fair election.\n\n10. Delivered the most meaningful housing affordability bill in 40 years, reinforcing our commitment to drive down the high cost of living for everyday Americans.\n\nAgainst all odds, House Democrats were consistently successful in the minority. We must now deliver the dramatic change the American people are demanding in the majority.\n\nIn the new Congress, we will aggressively fight for an affordable America. Life is way too expensive, and millions of hardworking taxpayers are drowning in this failed economy. As part of our effort to turn things around, every single member of our majority will play a meaningful role. My goal is to empower you to act decisively in three key areas: (1) Affordability (2) Accountability and (3) American Values.\n\nAffordability\n\nDonald Trump and House Republicans promised to lower costs on Day One. They failed. Instead, toxic GOP policies like the Trump tariffs and war in Iran have done the exact opposite. People are suffering. Everyday Americans can’t thrive and can barely survive.\n\nHouse Democrats must do everything in our power to meaningfully lower the high cost of living. In doing so, we will try to find bipartisan common ground whenever and wherever possible. Earlier this year, our Caucus established five working groups to address the affordability crisis: (1) housing; (2) healthcare; (3) groceries and goods; (4) gas and utilities and (5) caregiving. In partnership with our Chairs, the committees of jurisdiction and the entire Caucus, it’s imperative that we get to work immediately. Accordingly, we must decisively address these affordability issues in the new Congress. Here in America, when you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to live an affordable life, a comfortable life and a good life. That’s the American dream, and House Democrats are determined to revive it.\n\nIn addition to the forward progress that we must make in the next two years, there is a lot of damage done by the MAGA extremists that needs to be repaired. During the first 100 days, House Democrats must act to reverse the Medicaid cuts, restore SNAP funding, extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, eradicate the Trump tariffs and stop the reckless war of choice in Iran. The era of MAGA extremism is coming to a crashing end.\n\nAccountability\n\nThe days of the House functioning like a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trump Administration are over. Congress will assume its place as a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch.\n\nWe must root out corrupt price gouging, clean up the mess at the Supreme Court and ban Members of Congress from trading stocks. Accountability begins at home.\n\nThe massive corruption the country has experienced from the Trump Cartel explains why very little is getting done to help everyday Americans. That changes immediately. Anyone who is stealing from the American people, ripping off the American people or screwing over the American people can no longer hide. We are going to hold the crooks accountable.\n\nAmerican Values\n\nFinally, we must restore classic American values like liberty and justice for all, equal protection under the law, the unfettered right to vote in a representative democracy and our heritage as a nation of immigrants. To that end, I look forward to drawing upon the insights and perspectives of every single part of the Caucus in the days and weeks ahead. House Democrats must deliver dramatic change.\n\nMAGA extremists failed to break our country. The American people have now broken the fever of MAGA extremism once and for all. Our hard-fought success gives us the opportunity to restore the promise of an affordable America in every community. The next chapter in our country’s 250-year journey begins today.\n\nThank you for your consideration of my candidacy to serve as the 57th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.\n\nSincerely,\n\nHakeem Jeffries\n\nDemocratic Leader", "collected_at": "2026-11-05T12:59:29Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-05T13:00:16Z"}

One milestone fills me with particular joy and pride: the election of more than 100 Democratic women to the House of Representatives.\n\n“This victory reflects the extraordinary quality of our women candidates and a deliberate commitment to their success. Leader Hakeem Jeffries and DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene joined with the Democratic Women’s Caucus, Elect Democratic Women, our partners in Labor and women’s organizations to recruit, support and elect outstanding women. Together, they turned opportunity into victory.\n\n“Electing Democratic women has been my passion since I first came to Congress in 1987, when there were only twelve of us. We made a decision to make more room for women at the tables of power — and generations of candidates, organizers and supporters have carried that work forward. California has been especially generous, with our Ultimate Women’s Power lunches and events in the North and South helping women win across the country.\n\n“The impact of women in Congress is measured in the progress we have delivered: better healthcare, greater economic opportunity, stronger protections for our rights and a brighter future for our children. With more than 100 Democratic women bringing their experience, courage and determination to the House, even greater progress is within reach.\n\n“On a personal note, serving alongside women in positions of power has been one of the greatest honors of my public service — and one of its greatest joys. These impacts are compounded by the damaging flooding in October 2025, which have seriously strained available resources for recovery for previously affected communities.”\n\nThe Governor’s request seeks Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for Archuleta and Rio Grande Counties, where state and federal officials have already validated nearly $27 million in eligible damages. The flooding also impacted Alamosa, Conejos, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Mineral, Montezuma, Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties, where damage assessments continue and additional requests for federal assistance are expected.\n\nIn late October and early November, severe storms brought devastating flooding and debris flows to Southwestern Colorado, damaging roads, bridges, utilities, homes, and businesses, and cutting off access to entire communities. Preliminary assessments for Archuleta and Rio Grande Counties have identified approximately $10.6 million in damage to local roads, bridges, and culverts; $2.44 million in damage to public utilities; and $8.59 million in damage to parks and recreation facilities. These figures do not include additional damage assessments underway or separate federal highway repair costs.\n\n“Without additional support, residents could face unsafe homes and drinking water, long delays in rebuilding critical roads and bridges, and the loss of local businesses,” wrote the lawmakers. “Successful recovery is essential to restoring these communities’ economies, which depend on agriculture, tourism, outdoor recreation, and hunting and fishing.”\n\nThe full text of the letter is available here and below.\n\nDear Mr. President:\n\nWe strongly support Governor Jared Polis’ request on October 31, 2026, for an expedited Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Southwestern Colorado and the San Luis Valley in response to the recent extensive and devastating flooding throughout the region. While this request pertains to the initial flooding on October 22-25, we are writing in the midst of a second catastrophic flooding event across the same region, which adds urgency to this request. These impacts are compounded by the damaging flooding in October 2025, which have seriously strained available resources for recovery for previously affected communities.\n\nBeginning October 22, 2026, torrential rain fell on the San Juan Mountains and San Luis Valley, already saturated by weeks of rainfall. During this initial flooding event, the San Juan River in Pagosa Springs crested at its second-highest level since 1911, and the Rio Grande reached approximately 11,000 cubic feet per second, surpassing its 1949 record. Although assessments are ongoing, totals showed the initial flooding damaged approximately 700 homes across Archuleta and Rio Grande Counties, completely destroying 16 homes and 6 commercial buildings. The flooding caused extensive damage to multiple roads and bridges, overwhelmed wastewater systems, and contaminated private wells. The Colorado National Guard airlifted stranded residents to safety, and we are grateful that no fatalities have been reported.\n\nAs outlined in the Governor’s expedited request, the affected counties and Tribe have suffered damages severe enough to qualify for the Public Assistance (PA) Program. The Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment validated$26,989,000 in PA-eligible damages. As assessments continue, additional losses are likely to be identified with additional assistance requested. Granting the Governor’s initial request for Archuleta and Rio Grande Counties will expedite urgent repairs for public infrastructure damages.\n\nThe State of Colorado is also requesting the activation of the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for these counties in order to implement better infrastructure solutions to protect against future monsoon seasons and flood events. As these local communities have historically been proudly self-reliant, they are eager to rebuild more resiliently.\n\nSuccessful recovery is essential to restoring these communities’ economies, which depend on agriculture, tourism, outdoor recreation, and hunting and fishing. In already isolated rural areas, road closures are cutting residents off from their homes, schools, work, and essential services. We appreciate the Federal Highway Administration moving quickly to approve $6.5 million in quick release funds to help with immediate repairs on US Highway 160, US 550, and Colorado Highway 151, all which provide critical routes into the communities most impacted by this disaster. Without additional support, residents could face unsafe homes and drinking water, long delays in rebuilding critical roads and bridges, and the loss of local businesses.\n\nWe thank you in advance for your expedited review and approval of the Governor’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration.\n\nSincerely,\n\n###", "collected_at": "2026-11-05T12:59:29Z", "updated_at": "2026-11-05T13:00:16Z"}
